AI: Nigeria proposes that African countries pool their computing power
Running artificial intelligence takes huge, very expensive rooms full of computers. At the BUILD 2026 forum in Abuja, Nigeria's Minister of Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, proposed that African countries share these facilities instead of each building its own.
Nigeria is already preparing a shared data centre with Togo. The country also rose from 103rd to 73rd place in Oxford's ranking of how ready countries are for AI. For now this is a proposal, not a signed agreement between countries.
What it means for you
If Africa shares its resources, AI tools built for our languages and markets could arrive sooner and cost small businesses less.
